The Lettermen’s Tony Butala was credited as a producer on some of the groups 45s in the early 70s, such as “Morning Girl” and “Worlds”. Back in the 60s he co-produced some little known surf and pop gems.
He along with co-producer Bob Todd and Barry Richards wrote this Honeys’ sound-a-like, recorded by the Surf Bunnies.
Barry Richards was in a twist band with Bobby Hart in the early 60s. He went on to write songs with various composers. Chuck Jackson’s/Helen Shapiro’s “Look Over Your Shoulder” was one of his, as was Herman’s Hermits’ “The Man With The Cigar”. Barry wrote the flipside to “Surf Bunny Beach”, a dreamy ballad, “Our Surfer Boys”.
Other 45s produced by Tony Butala and Bob Todd included Hillary Hokum’s “Tears Of Joy” (Rally, 1965) and the Vulcaines’ surf instrumental “Cozimotto” (Galaxy, 1963). Both are on You Tube.
