Songwriter Cindy Jordan, who was once named “Miss Jose Cuervo,” wrote the song “Jose Cuervo” in 1977 when she was a cocktail waitress in Torrance, California. According to “The Billboard Book of Number One Country Hits,” the song (originally written for a man) was first pitched to country singer Johnny Duncan. He passed on it and Cindy then rewrote it from a female perspective. After the release of Shelly West’s recording of “Jose Cuervo” in January of 1983, the tequila’s manufacturer, Heublein, claimed a sales increase of 27 percent in the ensuing eight months!
