For my recent TRANSMISSIONS 2022 course, we created a downloadable companion music album of 10 songs, as one of the support tools for the journey. Among those tracks was an unreleased cover song we created last year - GULLS, by British Singer-Songwriter, David Gray.

Today, we release the track publicly.

I’ve loved David’s music since 1998, but when GULLS was released in 2014 (on his ‘Mutineers’ album), something about the power in that song got hold of me. I later heard David say that he thinks GULLS is a “...special song, and special songs don’t happen very often”. The song to me always felt like an earthly prayer, so it was nice to hear him describe the spiritual experience he had while writing it.

My journey to creating the cover happened in a roundabout way.

In summer of 2021, I embarked on a private ‘Singers Journey’ with the brilliant Brothers Koren - Isaac and Thorald to carve out more space within my body for my voice, and perhaps reclaim a part of my old way of singing. When Isaac asked me to choose a song to sing at the end of the journey, GULLS felt like the perfect choice. Harmony singing is my favourite thing to do, and that song gave me a 3 part vocal harmony throughout, so it was perfect. Thorald beautifully played the piano, then added guitars, while Isaac created some backing vocal textures.

It all went from California over to Davor’s studio in Slovenia, where he mixed and also added some additional finishing touches to the song. And now, we send it out into the world to do what it is supposed to do for those who will find it.

I am very aware that the last 3 songs we have released, have all been cover songs, and interestingly, they have all had the word GOD as a focus. (The Deer’s Cry in April, Running Up That Hill in July, and now Gulls) That link was not at all intentional, but now that I reflect on it, I think there’s something lovely and meaningful about that.

These three cover songs feel like a good energetic bridge to our upcoming album of new and original material, TIMELINES, which we will release later this year.

But for today, we hope you enjoy GULLS.
