Gene and his horse Champion were riding in the 1946 Santa Claus Lane Parade in Los Angeles Christmas parade and as he passed, he could hear the crowd saying "here comes Santa Claus". It inspired him to write the lyrics to this song. Oakley Haldeman wrote the music. In1947, he recorded the song for Columbia records and it peaked at #5 on the Country charts and #9 on the Pop charts.
