Noel Regney and Gloria Shayne were a husband-and-wife songwriting team in New York in the early 1960s. When asked to write a Christmas song in late summer 1962, Regney and Shayne declined because they believed Christmas had become too commercialized.

By October 1962, escalating tensions between the United States, Russia, and Cuba plunged everyone into the Cuban Missile Crisis. Moved to create a call for peace, Regney and Shaye wrote "Do You Hear What I Hear?", a tale of the annunciation of peace to the shepherds in Bethlehem.

It's a song that has been covered by hundreds of artists, but we both like the Perry Como version, so we modeled this version on that.

(Trivia: the original 1962 recording was by the Harry Simeone Chorale, but the most successful version was Bing Crosby's 1963 recording - propelled to prominence by his performance on a Bob Hope Christmas special two weeks after the assassination of President Kennedy.)
