[Daily Gugak] Day 18 - “Suyeonjangjigok” for Solo Geomungo

Description

“Suyeonjangjigok” (“Song of Increased Longevity”) is a piece of court music expressing the wish for a longer life, which was performed at royal banquets in the Joseon dynasty. “Suyeonjangjigok” was played as accompaniment to the dance Suyeonjangjimu performed in 1828 at the 40th birthday party of Queen Sunwon (1789–1857), hosted by Crown Prince Hyomyeong, the son of King Sunjo.

The piece was also played under the title of “Wonmugok” as accompaniment to the dance entitled “Mansumu” at a banquet celebrating the 41st birthday of King Kojong and the 30th anniversary of his ascending the throne. The banquet took place at Geunjeongjeon and Kangnyeongjeon Halls in Gyeongbokgung Palace in 1892.
