Description
Literally “scattered melodies,” sanjo is folk solo instrumental music. Sanjo today is one of the most representative solo genres, comprising a set of related pieces for solo melodic instrument and janggu, a drum. A number of “schools” (ryu) are recognized, each based on the performance style of a master musician.
The sound of the geomungo, a fretted zither played with a bamboo stick, suldae, is lower and heavier and easily creates dramatic contrast between heavy and clean tone color and thin and smooth timbre, conveying the characteristic dynamism of sanjo. Two major schools are currently performed on the geomungo.
